Laboratory Analysis with Jordi Labs: 4 Essential Techniques

Jordi Labs is an experienced contract laboratory analysis partner, with a suite of analytical tools at our fingertips and a team of expert chemists who are prepared to tailor all necessary testing parameters towards your unique objectives. We offer a completely customized service based primarily around ten overarching analytical technique categories.

In this article, we aim to briefly introduce four of our core laboratory analysis testing methods and hopefully offer further reading if you find yourself drawn towards a specific field of analysis.

Mass Spectrometry

Mass spectrometry – often abbreviated to MS – is a fundamental analytical method that encompasses a range of underlying techniques. The basic principle of mass spectrometry involves the measurement of mass-to-charge ratios of ions originating from sample material.

Mass Spectrometry excels in the identification of exact masses, elemental compositions and trace component detection. It is the go-to technique in analytical chemistry when identifying unknowns.

Liquid Chromatography (LC)

Liquid chromatography is a tried-and-true method used to separate compounds into their constituent parts and analyze their composition via a variety of detection methods. As with mass spectrometry, there are various underlying methods available for liquid chromatography laboratory analysis, though high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is perhaps the eponymous type. HPLC passes compounds through a column solid support by pumping a solvent under pressure. The affinity of the compound for the solid support as compared to the solvent (mobile phase) determines the length of time the compound takes to travel through the column. Ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) is a newer technique which uses smaller solid support particles and higher pressures to improve separation efficiency.

At Jordi Labs, we have a firm grasp of various chromatographic methods, including analytical and preparative HPLC and UHPLC in normal and reverse phase modes as well as ion exchange, HILIC and other mechanisms. We are also able to utilize a choice of detectors depending on your analyte of interest.

Interested in Liquid Chromatography?

We are adept in the field of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) too, also known as size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), which is primarily used for the determination of sample molecular weight. Jordi Labs’ pedigree in the field of GPC laboratory analysis is unmatched, given our history in the design and supply of finely-tuned GPC columns and chromatographic resins.

Microscopy

Microscopy has moved beyond the visible into the realm of electrons and atomic-scale forces, enabling us to visualize samples at previously unprecedented levels. At Jordi Labs, we are able to extract rich information about sample composition, morphology, tribology, and so on by using a wide range of microscopic techniques. Laboratory analysis with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), for instance, empowers users with the ability to interrogate the chemistry and physical surface structures of samples down to the range of tens of nanometers (nm).

Spectroscopy

Spectroscopy exploits the myriad interactions between electromagnetic radiation and physical matter to study a near limitless range of sample properties. Laboratory analysis has benefited greatly from our ability to manipulate and reproduce radiation from across the electromagnetic spectrum, giving rise to a diverse range of spectroscopic techniques suited for specific fields of study. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), for example, provides unprecedented insights into the chemical environments and molecular structure within samples under test.
