The pH scale is a logarithmic expression of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. At room temperature, pH measurements lower than 7 indicate acidic solutions while pH measurements above 7 indicate basic solutions. Typical pH measurements vary between 0-14. The pH of a solution can be measured with glass electrodes or with color-changing indicators such as phenolphthalein or litmus. The pH of a solution can affect the solubility of certain compounds such as metals, acids, bases and some organic analytes. Additionally, some polymers hydrolyze at very high or very low pH.
