Simulating material processing, determining the processing characteristics of materials.
This method determines the shear viscosity and elasticity of viscous materials. Measurements are made of the apparent viscosity (resistance to flow) over a broad range of shear rates and at varied temperatures. One of the main advantages of capillary rheometry is that it provides information under conditions which are comparable to those encountered in molding, calendaring, extrusion, etc. The temperature, shear rate and other parameters are selected according to customer specifications so as to replicate the intended processing conditions. In a “Shear Sweep” experiment, the melted plastic is extruded through a capillary and the force at various shear rates is determined. Capillary rheometry allows for other rheological and process characteristics to be determined, including die swell, melt fracture, wall slip, flow/no-flow stress, melt strength, haul off and pVT relationships.
Capillary rheometers are versatile and widely used in the rheological measurement of viscous materials.
